Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered the Punjab government to shift from normal petrol-powered motorcycles to battery-powered electric vehicles to combat the smog crisis effectively.

The court remarked that control over air pollution and safeguarding the global environment have become the increasing need for the sustainability of humankind.

This decision was announced in a hearing on smog control measures, wherein LHC justice Shahid Karim emphasised the need for policy regulation for small and medium-sized public transport in Lahore.

He said implementing the smog policy will help tackle the smog crisis faced by the citizens of Lahore while saving them from being a victim of the same crisis again.

Karim also called for strict monitoring of motorcycles to enforce smog reduction policies to help improve the air quality. The case has been adjourned by the court till November 20 for further proceedings.

The recently published report of Punjab Urban Unit identified that smoke-emitting vehicles contribute 83.15% to the air pollution in the province.

The report highlighted the need to monitor emissions from the old or poorly maintained vehicles which might cause a major air pollution problem.
