Microsoft has announced the integration of Neural Processing Unit (NPU-optimised) versions of DeepSeek R1, a cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) model, directly to Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs soon.

This integration will allow developers to build AI-powered applications that run efficiently on devices.

Initially, the DeepSeek R1-based features will be available on new Snapdragon X-powered devices.

Microsoft will commence the rollout with the "DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-1.5B" model, targeting devices equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite chips.

Laptops from renowned brands such as Asus, Lenovo, Dell, HP, and Acer will be among the first to receive this upgrade.

This rollout strategy is attributed to the superior capabilities and power efficiency of Snapdragon X chips, particularly their NPUs.

Later on, Intel Core Ultra 200V and AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 series will also integrate DeepSeek R1 Distill.

Notably, distilled DeepSeek R1 7B and 14B variants will be available via AI Toolkit, aiming to take full advantage of Copilot+ PC NPUs.

For the unversed, the DeepSeek R1-based AI feature will be able to function without an internet connection on Copilot+ PCs.

Moreover, it will reduce data privacy concerns as the user data will no longer need to be uploaded to the cloud for processing.
