The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) on Saturday has launched a new digital birth and death registration system in collaboration with provincial governments to make the process faster, more transparent, and accessible to citizens across Pakistan.

According to NADRA officials, the process has been initiated under the National Biometric and Registration Policy Framework (NBRPF), which was approved by the prime minister on January 1, 2025, and is now in the pilot process, with the intention of rolling it out nationwide as soon as all provinces have the full capability for implementation.

As part of this phase, more than 50 hospitals and health centres are already implementing the process, which includes major hospitals such as PIMS, CDA, and all Federal Government hospitals in Islamabad; Lady Aitchison Hospital Lahore; Bolan Medical College and Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Quetta; District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospitals in Haripur, Batkhela, and Mirpur; as well as hospitals located within Gilgit, Hyderabad, and Matiari.

Notably, the automated process facilitates immediate communications to NADRA’s system for the births and deaths reported to hospitals. Families receive immediate notification via short message service (SMS) and via the NADRA Mobile App directing them to report citizen registrations at their nearest Union Council.

Up to the time of this announcement, NADRA has received over 4,000 birth communications and 407 death communications as part of this new electronic system for reporting births and deaths.

Officials also noted that citizens can self-register births or deaths either online or by visiting local offices, the pilot is experiencing success in parts of Punjab, and citizen registration is planned for expansion across the entire country.
