Amid rising cyber attacks in the wake of dramatic technological advancement, Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), the country's national oil and gas exploration firm, has foiled a ransomware attack on some of its IT infrastructure components.
The cybercrime was detected by PPL on 6th August 2025, with the company stating that the incident was swiftly countered and no loss was detected on critical systems or sensitive data, as reported by Business Recorder.
The oil and gas explorer giant conveyed the development in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Friday, confirming that its internal cybersecurity safeguards were promptly invoked upon detection of the intrusion.
The IT and cybersecurity teams, in collaboration with external experts, used effective containment measures, including the temporary suspension of selected non-critical IT services to minimise impact.
PPL noted that the threat was quickly addressed due to its multi-layered cybersecurity framework.
There is no indication of business-critical or sensitive data being compromised, and core operational systems remain unaffected.
PPL received a ransomware note from an external actor and reported the matter to relevant law enforcement and regulatory authorities, with investigations ongoing.
The company maintained that no contact was made with the hackers and that financial transactions were carried out manually during the incident.
