Artificial intelligence (AI) seems to be expanding beyond tech, IT and what's automatable, as a local Urdu news channel based in Lahore, Pakistan— has launched Pakistan's first AI news reporter.
The AI-assisted news reporter is capable of delivering news bulletins in Urdu, according to the news channel, which conveyed the announcement from its official Instagram account.
The AI-powered presenter can also provide real-time updates and pre-scripted news segments.
Debuting "Pakistan’s first-ever AI reporter" brings the local news channel on par with the handful of regional broadcasters that have integrated AI in news reporting.
The move has drawn mixed reactions from both media professionals and the public, with some applauding the innovative use of AI, while others raising concerns about its impact on human journalists.
That said, the introduction of AI has also ignited debates on whether such journalism-centred roles, traditionally held by human reporters, would replace humans and prompt unemployment in an already-shrinking job market.
It's worth noting that AI-generated news anchors have been introduced in several countries, including China, India, and Kuwait.
