Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif during a meeting of the Apex Committee of the National Action Plan on Friday, vowed to tackle the growing challenge of misinformation and fake news on social media.

He emphasised that combating digital misinformation is essential to eliminating terrorism and extremism in Pakistan.

The PM highlighted how distorted facts and false narratives shared on social media are damaging the country’s image. He noted that much of this anti-Pakistan content originates from individuals abroad and is designed to mislead the public and harm national stability.

Moreover, he also cited recent fake news about the martyrdom of Rangers personnel as an example of how misinformation can erode trust and create confusion.

However, PM Shehbaz Sharif stressed the need for a unified approach to counter digital threats, urging collaboration among stakeholders to build a robust response strategy.

Notably, the government plans to address these digital challenges by creating a comprehensive framework to monitor and combat fake news. This strategy aims to utilise technology to safeguard Pakistan’s online presence and ensure accurate information reaches the public.
