Punjab's first modern Safe City project has been launched in Bahawalpur, which is fully operational and has artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

The Rs450 million project aims to improve public safety, reduce crime, and give citizens easy access to police to resolve issues more quickly.

Bahawalpur Range Safe City SSP Muhammad Kashif Abdullah indicated that the Safe City project is the first modern Safe City project in Punjab to feature AI.

The installation included 257 cameras, which are stationed across thirty-six locations in the city, covering key locations across Bahawalpur. The cameras will include number plate recognition, facial recognition, and AI-based sensors to recognise how many people are in a vehicle.

This system operates flawlessly at nighttime and daytime, ensuring no downtime. Individual traffic police officers are also equipped with body-worn cameras as an added layer of accountability for police and monitoring of traffic police processes.

Under the Safe City project, two digital policing stations have been organised for the tracking of crimes against women and children that run from the first emergency call to punishment.

Near heavy pedestrian footfall locations of women, emergency buttons have been installed for immediate action by the police.

Bahawalpur DPO Hassan Iqbal stated the system worked actively during Muharram, inclusive of Ashura, over the entire city.

He said the technology will help bring criminals to justice faster, curb street crime, and enhance police station performance.

The Safe City project is now active in Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan, with Bahawalnagar next in line. Cameras will soon be connected to petrol pumps, industries, banks, and gold markets, expanding their reach.
