In a major move to enhance Punjab's public transit, a province-wide electric bus service will be introduced across all districts of Punjab.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced that by December this year, advanced electric buses will be operational in every district of the province.
In a post shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the chief minister revealed that 100 new electric buses have already departed from Shanghai port for Pakistan.
She emphasised that citizens will have safe and affordable transportation through electric buses, which will be available for only a Rs20 fare and will feature climate control and CCTV cameras for security.
Special attention is being given to underserved districts such as Mianwali, Okara, Nankana Sahib, Muzaffargarh, Vehari, Pakpattan, and Dera Ghazi Khan where the electric bus service is expected to significantly reduce transportation challenges.
Officials believe the project will not only improve mobility but also uplift the overall quality of life in these regions.
In a related development, Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar confirmed the successful trial run of the Lahore tram project.
The service, slated for a February 2026 launch, is seen as another major step toward sustainable urban transit.
With the combined rollout of electric buses and tram services, Punjab’s transportation landscape is poised for a transformative shift.
