Toyota has announced that production of the fifth-generation GR Supra will end in March 2026, closing the chapter of one of the most iconic sports cars.
First launched in March 2019, the GR Supra was developed in collaboration with Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft (BMW), sharing platforms and powertrains with the BMW Z4, which is also nearing the end of its production.
The fifth-generation Supra made its global debut in Toyota’s 2020 model year lineup, and in November 2024, Toyota released a “Final Edition” variant as a special way to cap off the model's legacy.
This decision by Toyota aims to tighten global emissions standards and soaring development costs after the expiration of its joint development deal with BMW. The Supra nameplate will also not be retired since the company has already begun working on the sixth-generation GR Supra with a tentative release date of 2027.
The succeeding model will possibly be available as a hybrid or full-electric option as part of the carmaker's electrification drive.
Moreover, the Final Edition GR Supra will feature unique styling, special badging, and performance upgrades to make it a collector's item and the last chance to own a brand-new fifth-generation Supra.
Toyota promises that the next Supra will infuse its iconic sports heritage with modern technology, promising even more impressive driving dynamics along with advanced hybrid performance, though full details remain under wraps.
