In what appears to be the outset of a series of closures triggered by Google's algorithmic changes, Gazete Duvar, one of the renowned and independent news sites in Turkiye, has ceased its operations.

The news website shut down owing to financial constraints caused by changes in Google´s search algorithm and high inflation, The News cited Gazete Duvar founder Vedat Zencir as announcing.

“With Google´s algorithm changes, we started to suffer serious revenue losses, which we expect to continue.” Zencir shared in a farewell column published on Gazete Duvar.

The Gazete Duvar founder added in his farewell column that the publishing costs in Turkiye have nearly doubled because of the inflationary economic policies and crises which the country has been battling.

“Given the current conditions, the management could not, in good conscience, ask employees to make further sacrifices in an already challenging and high-risk profession,” Zencir detailed.

It's worth noting that the website launched on August 8, 2016, when the country was reeling from a political upheaval escalated by a coup attempt on July 15, 2016.
