Last year, Google introduced support for Ultra HDR (High Dynamic Range), a format that combines multiple images to create a single picture with more detail and colour. This upgrade was initially announced for Android 14 and the Pixel 8 series.

Currently, Google is gearing up to add support for Ultra HDR image capture to the CameraX API (Application Programming Interface), which is used by third-party apps like Instagram to improve image capture quality.

How will it work?

The CameraX library allows third-party apps to access cameras without additional controls. With Ultra HDR support, several apps will be able to capture photos that are even more vivid and detailed. It's like upgrading your camera without buying a new phone.

Interestingly, this feature is set to be released for several social media apps, including Instagram and Snapchat, which have already confirmed support for Ultra HDR on the Samsung Galaxy S24 series. Additionally, tech enthusiasts can expect more apps to follow suit.

Devices need to be running Android 14 or higher and have cameras that support HDR to capture Ultra HDR images. Devices with HDR screens can display Ultra HDR images in their full intensity. All Android devices can share Ultra HDR images.

Besides Ultra HDR support, CameraX 1.4 has some exciting upgrades, including video stabilisation, separate HDR settings for preview and video, and new camera effects. The search engine giant has been working on this update since the beginning of the year. This release of CameraX 1.4 will likely prompt most developers to quickly add Ultra HDR support to their apps to keep up with the best in mobile photography.
