Volkswagen is bringing vehicle control to the wrist with a major update to its myVW app, now available on Apple watchOS and Google Wear OS. The feature simplifies daily driving tasks and works with most VW models released from 2020 onward.
The smartwatch version of myVW lets drivers handle such essential functions without having to pull out a phone: everything from locking doors to checking fuel or battery levels. The update builds on Volkswagen's goal to create a seamless digital ecosystem for its customers.
Specifically for EV owners, the suite of tools is quite handy. On the go, users can easily see the state of charge, begin or end charging remotely, and precondition the cabin while the car continues to stay plugged in.
Preconditioning helps to maintain driving range and makes charging routines easier to handle, whether at home or at public stations.
Owners of gasoline-powered vehicles get new conveniences, too. The watch app can remotely start or shut off an engine, check fuel levels, lock and unlock doors, and activate the “Honk and Flash” feature to help owners locate their vehicle in heavily congested parking lots.
However, to unlock these functionalities, drivers need to log in via the myVW app, register their vehicle with the service, accept the terms of the myVW and myVW+ programs, and become subscribers.
Two subscription tiers, Remote Access and VW Vehicle Insights, begin at €8.53 per month, although trial access is available with some newer models.
