Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has unveiled a new AI-powered solution to automatically generate closed captions for content on its streaming service Max, saving users time and money.

Max's parent company Warner Bros. revealed that it is collaborating with Google to roll out “caption AI,” a tool that will automatically generate closed captions for its content.

To attain this feat, the entertainment conglomerate utilised Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform, an AI-powered platform for building and using generative AI, which offers access to the Gemini AI chatbot.

Starting with unscripted shows, such as news, reality TV, or sports, the Caption AI feature will only be available in the US. These captions generated for the unscripted shows on Max will have human oversight for quality assurance.

The entertainment conglomerate disclosed that the AI-powered captioning solution will decrease the time it takes to create closed captions by 80%. However, the cost will be cut off to half compared to “manual captioning.”

While automatic speech-to-text services for video captioning have been available for years, now with a large company like WBD testing the latest AI tool for this purpose will be the media and entertainment world’s step forward towards growing AI technology.

Additionally, Google Cloud’s CEO Thomas Kurian highlighted that the potential of AI to transform media processes will result in delivering significant business impact.

Notably, Max’s streaming service features many popular shows, including the Game of Thrones and The Last of Us.
