X users noticed the sudden rollout of a long-anticipated feature on late Friday night: a new “About this account” page that revealed the country an account was posting from based on its IP address.
The update appeared after users clicked on a profile’s join date, offering information far more precise than the self-reported “Location” field traditionally displayed on X.
The rollout was met with strong approval by users who viewed the change as an important step toward transparency, especially considering the fast-growing concern about bot networks, misinformation, and anonymous influence campaigns on the platform.
However, the debut was short-lived. Hours later, the country-of-origin field vanished from the “About this account” page with no explanation.
The sudden pull likely followed several reports of the feature returning incorrect location data.
X’s Head of Product Nikita Bier, who first previewed the tool weeks ago, replied directly to some of the complaints. One user said that it showed the country as the United States even though they live in Canada. Bier replied, “Fixing this now. Looks like Starlink threw us off.”
Another user also reported that the location of their account creation was showing as Korea, to which Bier explained it was because the user created their account with a VPN.
She said X will implement an indicator to flag such cases; it will be available on Monday in the Android and iOS versions and sooner on the web.
