ANI, an Indian news agency, has lodged a lawsuit against OpenAI, the developed behind ChatGPT, for committing copyright infringement in content for training its artificial intelligence (AI) models.

The Indian news outlet is the first to legally challenge OpenAI after petitions filed in the US against the AI developer by news organisations including the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune.

During the first hearing of the case, a New Delhi High Court judge issued a notice to OpenAI to provide a detailed response to the allegations hurled by ANI.

“We build our AI models using publicly available data, in a manner protected by fair use and related principles, and supported by long-standing and widely accepted legal precedents,” said an OpenAI spokesperson in a statement about the ANI lawsuit.

The OpenAI case is one among the spree of lawsuits filed by authors, visual artists, music publishers and other copyright owners against AI firms for training AI models nonconsensually.
