Power distribution companies across Pakistan have filed a petition, urging the authorities concerned to raise electricity prices for consumers nationwide. The request has been submitted to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) as part of the first quarterly adjustment for the ongoing fiscal year 2025-26.
As per the petition, the companies have requested NEPRA to impose an additional burden of Rs8.41 billion for consumers. It also stated that Rs21.7 billion must be recovered under capacity charges, while Rs3.98 billion has decreased from operations and maintenance.
The power distribution companies have also requested a Rs6.43 billion decrease in the use of system charges as well as a Rs2.88 billion decrease in transmission and distribution losses.
NEPRA has set the hearing of the power distribution companies for the petition on November 6, 2025, during which the regulatory authority will hear the reasoning for the adjustment as well as the possible impact on consumers’ bills as a given result of the adjustment.
This new request has come shortly after NEPRA approved a notable reduction in electricity prices for consumers in K-Electric’s Multi-Year Tariff (MYT) FY2024–30 on October 23.
Under that framework, K-Electric’s tariff fell from Rs39.97 to Rs32.37 per kWh (a difference of Rs7.6 per kWh); however, this revised framework has also lowered their revenue requirement from Rs606.9 billion to Rs519.4 billion.
Along with the overhaul, considerable structural changes also came in, including a 14% US dollar-linked Return on Equity (ROE) for the generation segment and a guaranteed minimum 35% ROE for some plants starting November 2025.
As the authority prepares to consider the new quarterly adjustment request, time will tell if this decision provides additional relief or adds pressure to electricity consumers facing higher energy costs.
