In a remarkable development, the North Carolina-based Epic Games has announced plans to add third-party games to its mobile app store

In this regard, Fortnite’s developer will add 19 third-party games on Android globally and 16 games on iOS in the European Union (EU).

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney stated: “We are opening up the Epic Games Store to mobile games from third parties, starting with a small catalogue and expanding over time to a very big catalogue."

"Our aim here isn't just to launch a bunch of different stores and different places, but to build a single cross-platform store," Sweeney noted.

The company launched its mobile game store in 2024, allowing it to bypass fees imposed by traditional app marketplaces like Google Play and Apple's App Store.

Epic Games also argued that users had limited choices beyond these two popular app stores, suppressing competition.

As part of its expansion, Epic Games will introduce a programme offering free games on its mobile store, starting with titles such as “Bloons TD 6” and “Dungeon of the Endless: Apogee.”

Epic Games will also temporarily cover core technology fees i.e. EUR 0.50, for developers participating in its free games programme in Europe.

On the sidelines, Epic Games' mobile store has attracted 29 million users as of the end of 2024, falling short of its target of 100 million users.

Moreover, the company offers Unreal Engine, a widely used computer graphics software for game development.
