Apple announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved its Apple Watch hypertension notifications feature, marking a major advancement for wearable health technology.
This innovative feature, which was unveiled along with the new Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3, has the potential to completely transform the way that hypertension is detected and treated around the world.
Apple's hypertension feature
Apple claims that the hypertension alerts function uses sophisticated data analytics from the optical heart sensor on the Apple Watch to spot possible hypertension symptoms over a 30-day period.
Users can acquire insightful knowledge about their cardiovascular health and make well-informed decisions regarding lifestyle changes or medical treatments with the help of this advanced method.
The feature will be rolled out globally next week in more than 150 countries and regions, including the US, EU, Hong Kong, and New Zealand, thanks to the FDA's approval.
A number of Apple Watch models, including the Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Ultra 2, and Ultra 3, will be able to use the feature.
Interestingly, the feature's high specificity rate of 95.3% in detecting normal blood pressure and passive monitoring approach highlight its potential to identify hypertension in a sizable percentage of users.
According to Apple, the feature will alert more than 1 million people with undiagnosed hypertension in the first year, enabling them to take charge of their health and reduce the long-term risks of hypertension, including heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems.
