Instagram has launched a new video editing app named Edits, which is meant to rival CapCut, the favoured editing app associated with TikTok.

The new app is free to download on iOS and Android, providing creators with a range of advanced editing features beyond what Instagram's standard app offers.

Edits include features such as green screen, cutout features, and AI animations that transform static photos into dynamic videos.

Edits is being positioned as a video-making app specifically designed for creators, with not only editing capabilities but also project management capabilities. They are able to monitor their video concepts, annotate, and review video performance.

Notably, this is what sets it apart from basic editing apps, since it is designed to enhance more in-depth video making and management.

Instagram Edits rival of Capcut

The editing feature of the new app closely resembles that of CapCut, a video editing app owned by ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok. The similarity has been noted by Instagram's chief Adam Mosseri who has, however, clarified that Edits is designed for creators, not regular users.

He said on Threads that Edits will have a more extensive set of creative tools, albeit one that might appeal to fewer people than CapCut.

Aside from its existing features, Instagram has previewed upcoming changes to Edits, which will feature keyframes, additional AI-driven editing capabilities, and support for collaborating with other users on video projects.
