The Islamabad Transport Authority (ITA) on Tuesday announced a major crackdown against smoke-emitting vehicles, with an aim to curb pollution in the federal capital.

The authority stated that it aims to maintain a healthier Air Quality Index (AQI) in Islamabad, giving a convenient commute without any air pollution.

Officials noted that growing air pollution in the city has raised serious concerns, causing strict enforcement measures across major routes in Islamabad.

It should be noted that inspection checkpoints were set up at different locations, where teams examined multiple vehicles for emissions and roadworthiness.

A total of 63 vehicles were inspected during the past 24 hours; out of which 23 were fined, while nine were impounded and shifted to local police stations for further action.

The authority stated that a Vehicle Emission Clearance Certificate is now mandatory for all drivers. Drivers are now required to carry valid certificates to confirm their vehicles meet emission requirements. Teams have been directed to verify certificates at checkpoints and take immediate action against violators.

ITA Chairman Irfan Memon directed teams to submit daily progress reports on inspections, fines, and enforcement activity. Memon noted that smoke-emitting vehicles pose a risk to the federal capital's air quality and cannot be allowed to operate.

Vehicles found contributing to pollution will face strict action, including fines and impoundment.
