Pakistan’s aviation sector grew on Monday with the launch of South Air, a new domestic carrier promising improved regional connectivity, affordable fares and enhanced access for underserved cities across multiple provinces.
Chairman Senate Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said that the launch represented a "historic step", underlining its role in connecting the people of underserved areas such as South Punjab, interior Sindh, parts of Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He said enhanced air connectivity would lead to local development and broadening access to education and public services while promoting national cohesion.
“The new airline will give confidence that South Punjab is all set to move forward,” he said. He also added that the management of the airliner should keep the fares reasonable so that people of all income groups could avail the service.
The flight will initially operate between Karachi and Multan, with plans to expand gradually to other cities across the country. The officials at the ceremony were optimistic that the airline would help increase economic activity, public convenience, and national linkages.
Renowned government officials and executives from the airline and the business community were present at the event. Gilani emphasised that the success of the new airline would act as an icon for service, safety, and progress of domestic aviation in Pakistan.
