Karachi authorities have extended the ban on motor cab rickshaws in Karachi on 25 major roads as part of ongoing efforts to reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety.

The restriction, imposed under Section 144, will now remain in force until February 21, 2026, according to an official notification issued by the Commissioner of Karachi.

This is according to officials who indicated that this came on the recommendation of traffic police, who have raised various concerns about traffic jams and accidents caused by motor cab rickshaws.

Such vehicles, especially the 1+2 and 1+4 rickshaws, have also been criticised for causing congestion or disrupting traffic flow along wide roads. The continued ban will ensure that there is a smooth flow for the entities mentioned above.

On the prohibited routes under the extended order, motor cab rickshaws are banned on the major roads of Karachi that include Shahrah-e-Faisal, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Shahrah-e-Quaideen, Sher Shah Suri Road, Shaheed-e-Millat Road, and Abdullah Haroon Road until Do Talwar.

Other major routes under the ban are Stadium Road, Sir Shah Suleman Road, Rashid Minhas Road, Shahrah-e-Firdousi, and Mauripur Road.

This ban also includes Shahrah-e-Pakistan, Hub Road, University Road, Korangi Road from Qayyumabad to Korangi Crossing, Orangi Road, and then from Surjani to Sohrab Goth. Apart from this, rickshaws are also not permitted on Super Highway up to Malir Halt, as well as on the Qaidabad to Landhi 89 route.

The traffic officials have asserted that the enforcement level shall remain tough. The police have been given the requisite power to act against offenders and have been encouraged to file cases according to Section 144. Rickshaw operators have been asked by the government to adhere to guidelines so that they are not penalised.
