Providing advanced parental controls, Meta has launched new features developed to give parents more ability to keep an eye on how teens interact with AI chatbots.

Coming in the wake of growing global concerns about AI and teen safety, this update will give a safer online experience, starting next year.

Parents will be able to block or limit AI character interactions and monitor conversation topics, while also being able to turn off chats entirely for teens, except for Meta AI, which will only engage in age-appropriate discussions.

The new parental control features will first be available in English across the United States (US), the United Kingdom (UK), Canada, and Australia, with the aim of expanding to other regions later.

Instagram Head Adam Mosseri said: “We recognise parents already have a lot on their plates when it comes to navigating the internet safely with their teens.”

Meta has confirmed that AI experiences for teens will stick to PG-13 content standards, excluding themes like violence, nudity, and drug use.

Meanwhile, the company is also testing time limits and AI-based age verification to ensure compliance. With these upgraded controls, Meta will give parents more confidence as AI becomes a growing part of online chatting.
