In the wake of a rapid surge reported in cyberattacks, the National Telecom and Information Technology Security Board (NTISB) has blared alarm over a wave of cyberattacks conducted via new tactics.
Sneaking into people's devices and stealing personal as well as confidential information, notorious hackers have resorted to targeting individuals, stated the NTISB advisory.
As reported by The News, the advisory especially points to browser extensions for ChatGPT, Gemini, and VPNs as unsafe tools. In addition to browser extensions, the advisory also pointed to popular websites including Facebook and various banking sites in Pakistan.
Underlining as an easy and potential target of hackers' new campaign, the advisory specifically took notice of 16 common extensions for being more likely to be affected, posing a high risk of data theft and other harmful intrusions.
Notable on the list of websites and add-ons containing malware and phishing baits are AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and OpenAI's GPT-4 for Chrome browser.
The NTISB advises internet users across Pakistan to avoid such free-of-cost websites and browser extensions mentioned in the advisory and opt for safer alternatives. It recommends users install only reliable and licensed extensions and update them on a regular basis.
