Google is improving the Emergency SOS feature on the Pixel Watch by introducing a confirmation step to avoid accidental activations during activities like workouts.

Emergency SOS allows users to contact emergency services or a preselected contact by pressing the watch’s crown five times in quick succession.

Previously, this would trigger a five-second countdown before placing the call. Now, the feature includes an additional step: users must hold the screen for three seconds to confirm the call.

How to enable Pixel Watch Emergency SOS feature?

If the touch-and-hold prompt is missed, the screen will automatically close after 20 seconds to further minimise accidental calls. Despite this new default behaviour, users who prefer the original setup can switch back to “Automatic call” by following these steps:

  1. Swipe down on your Pixel Watch.
  2. Go to Settings > Safety and emergency > Emergency SOS.
  3. Tap Ways to start SOS and select Automatically call.

This update is rolling out over the coming weeks, so it may not be immediately available for all users.

As a reminder, Google advises users to avoid hanging up if an emergency call is made by mistake. Instead, inform the operator that it was accidental to ensure no unnecessary resources are dispatched.
