Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday announced that the government will soon begin supplying regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) connections to domestic consumers across Pakistan, terming it a long-standing public demand.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Islamabad, the premier stated that restoration of gas connections for households was among the key demands of the people, adding that his government was dedicated to relieving citizens and providing them better access to the basic utilities.

The RLNG gas connection project is part of Pakistan’s larger efforts to ensure energy security and improve the distribution of domestic gas.

PM Shehbaz noted that gas supply was a very serious problem for the then Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government in 2022, as the nation faced financial restraints and a lack of infrastructure.

“During the PDM government in 2022, ensuring gas supply was a major challenge,” he noted. “It was a key public demand to resume the issuance of gas connections. At that time, we had to apologise to consumers.”

The PM stated that this programme continues the public welfare policies first rolled out under the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in 2013, when Pakistan was experiencing 20 hours of electricity cuts.

He also stated that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government's energy reforms had eliminated widespread load-shedding and put the country back on the development path.
