Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed the government's commitment to accelerating Pakistan's transition into a digital economy with artificial intelligence (AI) as a driver of economic modernisation and sustainable development.

Chairing a high-level meeting on the promotion of AI, the prime minister instructed the authorities to promote the rapid advent of modern technologies and expand digital infrastructure throughout the country.

He stated AI would be effectively leveraged to enhance productivity in industry, improve governance transparency, and create new opportunities for youth in emerging technological areas.

PM emphasised that the responsible and secure adoption of AI was at the forefront of the government's priorities, further directing that the National AI Policy be carried out effectively in line with the specific principles of data privacy, protection, and sovereignty.

He also approved the formation of a steering committee and an expert advisory committee to guide the deployment of AI-enabled initiatives across significant areas, including education, health, agriculture and security.

Highlighting the youthful, technologically-skilled demographics and an emerging start-up ecosystem, the PM noted Pakistan is well-positioned to emerge as the regional leader in AI if it has robust digital policies and strong industry support.

Moreover, the meeting was attended by federal ministers and special assistants to the Prime Minister, senior federal officials, and experts in AI.
