The Punjab government has launched an Electric Bike Scheme that offers citizens a cash incentive of up to Rs. 100,000 to swap out their petrol bikes with new electric two-wheelers.

The program, a part of the Chief Minister's Green Credit Program, intends to mitigate the release of emissions, as well as create a more sustainable mode of travel in Punjab.

Under the program, qualified individuals purchasing new electric bikes from December 2024 onward should apply within 18 months of purchasing a new bike at the official portal.

Who is eligible to apply for Punjab's Electric Bike Scheme?

According to the Program Director Rizwana Anjum applicants need the purchase date, make and model of the bike, registration plate number, chassis ID, and clear photos of the bike and registration documents.

Once the paperwork is submitted, a representative from the program will come to do a home visit to collect and check the information regarding the bike, and after this verification, buyers will receive a payment of Rs50,000 upfront as part of the green credit payment.

The second payment of Rs50,000 will be made once the rider uses the e-bike and links it to the official Green Credit app and racks up a total of at least 6000 km in 6 months.

This year, Punjab aims to shift 2,000 petrol bikes and 250 vehicles to electric models, a move estimated to reduce 8,000 tons of carbon emissions annually. The broader target is to electrify 30% of the province’s transport network by 2030, cutting transport emissions by 20%.

However, the Punjab EPA clarified that only factory-manufactured electric bikes qualify; retrofitted petrol bikes will not be eligible for the incentive.
