On World Safer Internet Day, observed on February 11, Kaspersky experts highlighted the increasing risks and cyber threats posed by analysing threats linked with a renowned gaming platform, Roblox. Kaspersky detected more than 1.6 million attempted cyberattacks obscured as Roblox-related files in 2024.
The gaming platform, which boasts millions of active users worldwide, is considered one of the most engaging and dynamic digital playgrounds. It connects children worldwide, letting them explore dynamic virtual realms that elevate their gaming experience. However, in their quest to customise their gaming experience, many players unintentionally install malicious files, endangering their privacy.
Last year, Kaspersky detected almost 1,612,921 attacks obscured as Roblox-related files. The highest number of attacks were recorded in August with 179,286 attacks, followed by 160,116 in September and 151,638 in October.
Scammers often lure gamers by offering them free in-game currency and exclusive rewards. In one of the schemes, users are requested to enter their game ID and username, select their preferred platform (Android, iOS, Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo), and generate a misleading illusion of an official multi-platform tool.
Later, players must complete the “verification” process to win rewards, such as iPhone, PlayStation, and more. However, before receiving their supposed prize, victims are asked to pay a delivery fee. Once the payment is completed, the scammers vanish, leaving victims with financial losses and no rewards.
Safer Internet Day emphasises the significance of digital safety, especially for young gamers who often fall prey to scams.
Kaspersky’s security expert Vasily Kolesnikov stated: “Cybercriminals are constantly evolving their tactics, and to protect kids who are actively exploring the digital world, we need to make cybersecurity an essential part of their upbringing. By promoting cyber hygiene, using trusted security solutions, and teaching essentials like enabling two-factor authentication, we can create a safer online environment where kids can enjoy their favourite games without falling victim to scams.”
