Snap has released Snap OS 2.0, a major update for its AR glasses, known as Snap Spectacles.

With the new operating system, users can now access augmented reality experiences straight from websites thanks to a native browser that supports WebXR.

What's new in Snap OS 2.0?

The browser's performance has been optimised, resulting in faster page loads and more energy efficiency. The update includes a resizable window, an easy-to-use toolbar, and a customisable home screen with widgets and bookmarks.

Moreover, users can manage their browsing history, refresh pages, and voice or text input website URLs. Spotlight Lens also enables multitasking by spatially superimposing digital content on the physical world.

As Snap observes, "You can enjoy content without ever having to look down at your phone thanks to the Spectacles' portrait orientation field of view, which is ideal for vertical video."

Users can browse videos, curate favourites, share, and view Spectacles captures in an interactive layout with the Gallery Lens. During transit, Travel Mode stabilises tracking systems and augmented reality content.

Prior to Meta's Connect conference, where advancements in AI and smart glasses are anticipated, this development places Snap at the forefront of AR innovation.

After releasing its developer-focused fifth-generation Snap Spectacles last year, Snap intends to release a consumer version in 2026.

By improving user experience and expanding the realm of augmented reality's potential, Snap OS 2.0 furthers the development of AR technology.
