Snapchat has acquired "Saturn," a social calendar app designed specifically for high school and college students.

While the deal's financial details have not been made public, this agreement marks the popular photo-sharing platform's most recent effort to enhance its ecosystem and appeal to Gen Z users.

Notably, the "Saturn" app distinguishes itself from conventional calendar apps and helps students to stay in touch with their peers and plan their daily activities in a better way.

Currently, around 80% of US high school-going students have the app installed. With this acquisition, Snapchat will utilise Saturn's calendaring knowledge into its platform, offering features suitable for younger consumers.

"We are happy to welcome the Saturn team to Snapchat. This purchase marks a calculated action for us to improve our platform's appeal to younger audiences," the company's spokesperson stated.

The acquisition also highlights Snapchat's initiatives towards social media landscape competitiveness. By investing in tools and features catered to Gen Z, Snapchat will be able to stay relevant and attract new users.

With this acquisition, the Saturn team, comprising almost 30 staff members, will join Snapchat.

As of now, the app will remain a stand-alone platform; however, Snapchat plans to include its features in the app shortly.

This comes as a positive development for Snapchat, as it might boost user retention and stimulate expansion.
