WhatsApp is developing a new feature, Guest Chats, that will allow users to send messages to individuals without a WhatsApp account. Currently, it is being developed in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android app version 2.25.22.13, which can be found in the Google Play Beta Program.
Guest Chats will improve WhatsApp’s messaging potential by providing users with a way to securely communicate with people who don’t have WhatsApp accounts.
Once Guest Chats are available, users will generate a special link for a chat that can be sent through SMS, email, by other means.
When the non-WhatsApp user accesses the link through their browser, they’ll be taken to a secure chat window — similar to WhatsApp Web — without needing to download the app or sign up.
While this is a welcome update from WhatsApp and adds more flexibility in chats, there will be some limitations to Guest Chats. The non-WhatsApp users won’t be able to send media files, like images or video files, features like voice or video calls won’t be available, and the mode will only support one-on-one chats, with no support for group chats.
Though there will be some limitations, WhatsApp assures that the entire chat will have full end-to-end encryption, meaning the chat will be private and secure between both users, even if one of them doesn’t have the app installed.
This feature builds on earlier developments like third-party chat integrations and shows WhatsApp’s efforts to meet EU privacy laws and give users more control over how they connect.
