The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a public advisory on phishing scams, urging users to be vigilant.

Describing phishing as a deceptive technique that uses fake emails, messages, or websites to extract personal information, the regulator warned that such scams are engineered to prompt hasty action from victims.

Common targets include one-time passwords (OTPs), account passwords, bank details, and other sensitive data, the PTA said in a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The PTA set out four simple precautions: do not click suspicious links; check and verify the sender; never share personal information with unknown contacts; and report any dubious links.

The advisory explicitly states that the PTA will never contact citizens to request personal information by phone, SMS, or email.

The regulator also encouraged people to share the guidance with friends and family to reduce the risk of further victims. The advisory included the authority’s social handles and its website as sources for further information and reporting.
