Google is reportedly working on integrating its “Nano Banana” AI image editing model into the Google Messages app, potentially bringing AI-powered image generation to everyday chats.
According to several rumours surfacing, a hidden code reference v20251009 suggests Google has begun early work on Nano Banana functionality. A Banana icon now appears in the app’s header when users long-press on a photo in a personal or group chat.
However, this icon currently does not do anything, which most likely means that Google is still testing this feature.

Nano Banana is Google’s AI image generation and editing model. It is designed to create or modify user photos while still ensuring realism and fine detail is maintained.
Moreover, it is powered on a smaller device and is a lot faster and more efficient than larger generative models.
The model first gained attention after being added to the AI Mode in Google Search and Google Lens, where users could generate and refine images directly in the search results.
Previously, Google Photos also started testing Nano Banana smart edits and improvements based on context in images.
It is important to note that if this feature is added to Google Messages, it means users could soon be using AI to enhance, recreate, or edit images that they have shared without leaving the text messaging space.
