With nearly every one of the Big Tech players investing heavily in the booming AI technology, Microsoft has finally launched MAI-Image-1, its own first-ever in-house image-generation model.
Microsoft's MAI-Image-1 release marks a breakthrough in the landscape of AI image generators, ditching the long-standing reliance on OpenAI technologies that have been critical to many of its AI products, including Copilot.
MAI-Image-1 is currently being tested on the public image comparison platform LMArena and will soon be integrated into Microsoft Copilot and Bing Image Creator.
The Windows creator claimed that this model can create photos with utmost realism and accuracy, with enhanced rendering of natural lighting, reflections, and landscapes.
Besides its integration into the company's flagship offerings, Microsoft said MAI-Image-1 delivers faster and more consistent results compared to some of the most prominent, while names were not specified for the direct rivals of MAI-Image-1.
MAI-Image-1's design also took into account feedback from professional artists and creatives to avoid repetitive or low-quality outputs, as well as infringement.
The new AI image generator has already made it to the top 10 on LMArena, where users compare results from various text-to-image models in blind tests, which indicates strong potential for the new technology.
Microsoft's debut AI image generator follows the introduction of two earlier models, MAI-Voice-1 and MAI-1-preview, launched over the summer.
Mustafa Suleyman, the head of Microsoft’s AI division, at the time said the company has a five-year plan to enhance its AI capabilities continuously, highlighting that MAI-Image-1 was trained on a carefully curated dataset, wherein safety, efficiency, and responsible output were prioritised.
