With the September 30 deadline looming for income tax return filing for the fiscal year 2024-25, taxpayers in Pakistan are awaiting a potential extension from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

Despite the revenue board rejecting rumours regarding a possible extension a day earlier, anticipation is building among individuals — salaried or non-salaried — that the FBR might announce a deadline extension as per their practice in past years.

On Monday, the FBR released a statement regarding an extension in the deadline for filing income tax returns for the fiscal year 2024-25, stating that the reports are "baseless and misleading."

The revenue board said: "The majority of taxpayers reside in areas unaffected by floods and have had ample time to file their income tax return for 2025."

However, as per an exclusive report published by a local media outlet, the FBR is expected to extend the income tax returns deadline for the tax year 2025 from September 30 to October 14.

“IRIS portal is fully operational, functioning smoothly, and taxpayers can easily file their tax return using the new simplified income tax return form," said the FBR a day earlier.

The FBR cautioned the citizens that failure to file income tax returns by September 30 will result in late-filer status and imposition of fines and other consequences under the Pakistani law.
