In line with an ongoing nationwide drive to digitise Pakistan's transport and traffic infrastructure, Karachi's traffic management is set to receive smart traffic signals aimed at alleviating chronic congestion and reducing road accidents.

Part of a massive technology-driven overhaul, each unit of these smart traffic signals would cost approximately Rs7.5 million, and the city plans to install around 400 smart signals, resulting in a total investment of roughly Rs3 billion. These signals are expected to enhance vehicle flow and minimise bottlenecks on major roads.

DIG Karachi Traffic Police Peer Muhammad Shah outlined these initiatives during a briefing at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Key to the technology-driven reforms under consideration by Karachi Traffic Police is the establishment of the Karachi Traffic Management Company, which will oversee traffic engineering efforts.

Shah highlighted that the city’s e-challan system has contributed to a drop in monthly traffic accidents from 96 to 46 since its implementation.

The fine structure is designed to promote compliance, and first-time offenders have the option to have their penalties waived at one of the 11 facilitation centres operating throughout the city.

These reforms are aimed at improving traffic management in Karachi, subsequently creating a safer and more efficient urban environment for regular commuters.
