OpenAI is reportedly developing an artificial intelligence (AI) music generation tool that allows users to create music from simple text and audio inputs.

According to several rumours surfacing, this generative-AI capacity will combine text with sound samples to generate music automatically, including melodies, harmonies, and rhythm.

OpenAI's new tools

The music generation tool would be used to produce original compositions and instrumental backings for videos, expanding the creative possibilities of AI in music production.

This was significant because it demonstrated a larger intent on OpenAI’s part to expand the possibilities of deep creativity through AI-enabled creativity and innovation with their tools.

It should be noted that this is not the first time OpenAI has developed an AI tool for producing music. Earlier in 2019, before ChatGPT, OpenAI developed MuseNet, a neural network that could generate four-minute-long pieces of music with ten total instruments and different types of music styles.

The renewed interest and development into AI structures for generating music comes as competition builds in the tech space. Other companies, including Spotify, are also incorporating AI tools into generating music, which allows users to request music by genre, mood, or activity, creating more personalisation for users when requesting music through voice is unavailable.
