Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the establishment of a modern digital ecosystem for the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on Saturday, which aims to bring global standards to Pakistan’s tax environment.
He also instructed the engagement of internationally recognised consultants to bring the project up to competitive standards.
During a meeting to review FBR reforms, the prime minister indicated that the country’s economy is “trending positively” due to the most recent developments within the FBR.
Federal Ministers Muhammad Aurangzeb, Ahad Khan Cheema, Minister of State Bilal Azhar Kayani, and senior officials, including FBR Chairman and Chief Coordinator Mr. Musharraf Zaidi, attended the meeting according to the PM Office.
Officials reported to the meeting by outlining the establishment of a centralised digital ecosystem which will connect all FBR data, from the production and import of raw materials to the manufacturing of products, and finally, to the purchase by the consumer.
The Prime Minister emphasised that this ecosystem must be robust enough to give interim digital visibility to the entire tracking of the value chain.
Shehbaz Sharif said all data provided by this platform should be used as a source to guide strategy and facilitate decision-making in the economy.
He emphasised that the reform’s ultimate goal is to reduce the tax burden on ordinary citizens by expanding the tax base and addressing the informal economy.
