In a strong advisory issued by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), telecommunications companies were directed to maintain network services without interruption and to take appropriate actions to assist citizens in flood emergency areas.
The advisory received on Monday similarly provided clear direction to telecom operators to always be prepared with working emergency contingency plans when operating in areas of high flood risk.
This included protecting telecom infrastructure; making critical resources for sustaining telecom services available to their employees; following PTA directives for immediate reporting of service interruptions; and sending flood alerts and other information to the public via SMS and other media.
PTA also activated its National Emergency Telecommunication Coordination Centre (NETCC) to improve coordination and response, as well as established liaison points in its headquarters in Islamabad and regional offices to have real-time coordination with mobile operators and local governments.
The advisory instructs telecom operators to deploy their well-trained technical teams, restore backup power, and establish prompt resolution of consumer complaints in flood-hit areas.
In recent years, Pakistan has experienced worsening weather patterns and climate-related disasters such as urban flooding, flash floods, and landslides, with connectivity becoming especially important for emergency services to ensure public safety in times of disaster.
PTA said it is closely monitoring the situation and will keep citizens informed about any service issues or restoration updates in the coming days. The Authority has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the public stays connected during these difficult times.
