The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has warned citizens about a growing fraudulent message impersonating a courier service, in which users are asked to enter verification codes.

The authority suggested: “Do not share any codes received via SMS or messaging apps, as these may be used for unauthorised access.”

Meanwhile, “Legitimate courier companies do not require recipients to input codes for parcel delivery,” PTA added.

Earlier, PTA warned Pakistani people to be on high alert for deceptive messages sent from local or international numbers that pretend to be WhatsApp’s official account and display its logo.

“The public is strongly advised not to click on any such links or respond to these messages,” PTA stated, adding that they should block the sender immediately and report the contact directly to WhatsApp.

The authority noted that while the messages appear authentic, they are crafted to manipulate users into compromising their digital security.

Moreover, the authority suggested that users regularly update their apps and activate two-step verification on WhatsApp to improve account security.

With the release of notifications regularly, PTA aims to protect consumers from digital fraud and urges the public to verify the authenticity of such messages before responding.
