Likely driven by the urgent need for regulation in the digital space, the government of Pakistan has sped up the establishment of a Social Media Regulatory Authority.
The formation of the social media regulator was brought to light by officials from the National Cyber Crimes Investigation Agency (NCCIA) during a Senate Standing Committee meeting.
It was also learned that the federal cabinet has approved the rules and regulations for the upcoming authority, and advertisements for hiring will soon go public, according to ProPakistani.
Chaired by Senator Ali Zafar, the committee highlighted the importance of effective oversight for online platforms. It was disclosed during the meeting that nine members of the National Assembly fell victim to scams impersonating Senator Irfan Siddiqui.
The NCCIA officials informed the committee that they had recovered Rs1.3 million linked to the fraud and arrested four suspects, with further efforts underway to bring the main perpetrator to justice.
The cyber crime regulatory body also reported having recovered Rs10m in WhatsApp hacking cases over the past five months.
