As internet users all over Pakistan continue to face internet slowdowns at regular intervals, netizens in Karachi and other cities across Pakistani reported disrupted internet speeds allegedly due to a "cable fault" following a outage at Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Following a widespread Amazon cloud outage that globally slowed popular apps like Snapchat and Canva, many internet users across Karachi and other Pakistani cities are said to be experiencing poor internet speeds.
The latest slowdown in Pakistan's internet services has been linked to a fault in the undersea PEACE cable system, which connects Pakistan to global networks.
Digital expert Habibullah Khan revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that the actual problem was with a cable cut on the PEACE system’s core infrastructure. The PEACE cable, originating in China and landing in Karachi’s Misri Shah gateway, supplies Pakistan with 600 Gbps of internet capacity.
Authorities are currently testing to pinpoint the fault’s exact location.
Although no official statements have come from the affected internet service providers, State Minister for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja attributed some disruptions—such as the Snapchat outage—to the global AWS failure.
It's worth noting that Pakistan’s connectivity relies not only on the PEACE cable but also on three undersea cable networks, including AAE-1, SMW-4, and IMEWE, all operated by the PTCL.
