Gmail for Android may soon let you ‘Mark as Read’ directly from notifications

Gmail's new feature isn't available to everyone, even to users trying to use the latest version of Gmail (2025.06.15)

Gmail is testing out a minor but useful feature on Android that could help users get through their inbox quickly. Several users have reported that Gmail is now showing a "Mark as Read" button in notifications.

This would allow Android users to mark emails as read without needing to even open the app, a feature that has long been available to iOS users and has been available in other email apps for some time.

For those who receive a large number of emails daily, this Gmail update could be a significant time-saver. Often, users don’t need to open every email to know if it’s important. Just looking at the sender and subject line is enough.

The change was first tweeted out by X user Kurt Gomez, who noted the "Mark as Read" option in his Gmail notifications, while he did note that it only appeared for one of his accounts. Meaning Google is likely running an A/B test and slowly rolling it out to selected beta users to see how it does.

Reportedly, though they did not provide any additional details. The feature isn't available to everyone, even to users trying to use the latest version of Gmail (2025.06.15).

How to check if you have new Gmail button:

  1. Make sure your Gmail app is updated to the latest version from the Play Store.
  2. Wait for a new email.
  3. When the email notification appears, check if there’s a “Mark as Read” button alongside “Archive” or “Reply.”
  4. If it’s not there, you might have to wait or try third-party tools like AutoNotification to add the feature.

If this shortcut rolls out widely, it would bring Gmail for Android on par with other email apps and improve productivity for millions.
