In a bid to stand tall as a potent player against wildly popular scanner apps like CamScanner, WhatsApp is said to have improved document sharing with a built-in document scanner allowing users to scan documents using their phone’s camera.
WhatsApp's new document scanner has been integrated into the app's latest beta version for Android, eliminating the need for additional apps as the tool enables users to capture, convert, and send documents directly within WhatsApp.
The feature was originally spotted in an earlier beta version, but is now being released to more users with the new update.
Users with the latest WhatsApp beta for Android installed on their devices have reportedly begun gaining access to this tool, which is gradually being available on the Google Play Store.
Using the document scanner on WhatsApp is more than easer, as users just have to tap the “Scan document” option to share a document, and the camera will open with a live preview, allowing them to rightly position the document before capturing it.
The most standout feature of the scanner is its two scanning modes: a manual mode for users who want control over the capture process and an automatic mode which is capable of detecting the document's edges and snaps the picture when perfectly correctly aligned.
Once scanned, WhatsApp swiftly converts the document into a PDF file, making it readily available for immediate sharing in chats or groups.
Scanned documents are saved on-device until sent, and are protected by end-to-end encryption, just like other messages and files on the platform.
