Bangladesh High Commissioner Iqbal Hussain Khan on Wednesday announced that Mahan Air will begin three weekly direct flights between Karachi and Dhaka starting in December.
Addressing the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), he said the new flights will provide more convenient travel options for businesspeople and travellers.
He further informed that the visa process has been simplified, with approvals now being issued in three to four days on the joint recommendation of LCCI and the Bangladesh Honorary Consulate in Lahore.
He pointed out that trade opportunities abound, with the country's rice being exported to Bangladesh and Bangladesh supplying fresh pineapples in return. Similarly, there is strong potential in both countries for textiles and readymade garments.
A direct cargo service is likely to be inaugurated shortly to cater to the increased volumes of trade. Although a cargo route has been in operation since December last year, there is a need for a direct, dedicated service.
Moreover, during the announcement it was highlighted that he Higher Education Commission of Pakistan will send a delegation from 12 universities to Bangladesh to explore academic collaboration in education.
The envoy also pointed to tourism as a promising sector, referring to the shared culture, history, and values between Pakistan and Bangladesh.
