The government, in partnership with Meta, launched Instagram Teen Accounts on Wednesday, marking a major step towards a safer digital experience for young users in Pakistan.

During the launch event, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said that this initiative aims to strengthen online protection for teens in the country, focusing on equipping them with safer navigation tools while educating parents regarding online security.

PTA Chairman Major General (R) Hafeez ur Rehman said: "The launch of Instagram Teen Accounts is a significant milestone in creating a safer digital ecosystem. The feature supports the authority's wider efforts to improve the online safety framework for teens across the country."

Instagram will automatically place users under 16 into Teen Accounts, which come with built-in safety tools. These include limitations on unwanted content, strict privacy controls, and filtering of sensitive content, and ensuring teens can explore the platform with advanced protection.

Meta Head of Safety Policy for South Asia, Dr Priyanka Bhalla said that Meta's global safety initiatives are enabling millions of teens, including those in Pakistan, to offer a secure and protected online experience.
