In a bid to offer relief to Karachi residents battling the high costs of electricity, the Sindh government has announced to provide affordable electricity to Karachiites (those living in Karachi).

Sindh Energy Minister Nasir Shah stated that under the SEPRAP initiative, both industries and residents in Karachi will receive electricity at rates significantly lower than those offered by K-Electric.

The electricity generated will be transmitted independently under the STDC framework, and the rates will not be affected by tariffs imposed by NEPRA, Shah explained.

"We will now be able to set our own electricity rates, which will be much lower than NEPRA’s," he added.

Recruitment for SEPRAP has been completed, and a notification will be issued this month, mentioned the energy minister, while emphasising that the primary focus is on economic zones.

Shah confirmed that SEPRAP has been constitutionally approved by the assembly, enabling Karachi residents to access affordable electricity.

It was also outlined that the government has signed an agreement with K-Electric to supply electricity from solar parks and instructed it not to purchase power generated from expensive fuel sources in the presence of solar energy.
