Internet users in Pakistan can look forward to faster and more reliable connectivity, as the government has announced plans for three new submarine cables.

The Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, provided this update during an interview and spoke about the importance of information technology to national development.

She said, 'At the moment, Pakistan connects to the world through seven submarine cables, but with these additional three submarine cables, internet speed and stability are now going to improve rapidly.

The minister pointed to exciting developments in the digital space, noting that there were almost 10 million new mobile subscribers within the past year, which brought Pakistan's mobile user subscriptions from 190 million to 200 million.

Land also has brought the usage of data consumption growth of 24% in Pakistan in the last two years. The minister also shared that about 8 million women used mobile internet for the first time, which is a significant moment for digital inclusion.

This increased interest is also supporting IT exports. "In the last year period, IT exports increased by 19%, and we see an upward trajectory continuing in IT exports," she added. The government is also working on a five-year digital plan named Connect 2030 that would strengthen connectivity moving forward.

To encourage fibre optic expansion, the government has removed right-of-way charges in CDA areas and plans similar steps for railways and the NHA.

Additionally, an upcoming spectrum auction will offer over 600 MHz of bandwidth, expected to increase internet speeds by 2.5 times and resolve telecom sector issues.
