Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has officially launched 10 million digital wallets for beneficiaries of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), highlighting the initiative as a “historic milestone” in the country’s drive towards financial transparency and a cashless economy.
The system takes biometric checks and CNIC verification. It guarantees transparent access to aid and lessens the waiting, offering a guard against fraud.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the prime minister formally launched the new system with a symbolic palm touch, describing it as a step towards empowering the country’s most vulnerable citizens.
He noted that 78% of the Ramadan relief package was already delivered digitally. The rollout includes 10 million free SIM cards, which are set to be distributed in collaboration with Jazz.
“Cashless transactions are the pressing requirement of our times. They save time, end corruption, and bring efficiency, helping Pakistan progress rapidly,” the prime minister stated.
“This digital wallet system is, in its true sense, blessed by the soul of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto,” the prime minister said, adding that it would provide recipients with safe and direct access to assistance.
Notably, the first phase covers cities such as Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Rahim Yar Khan. The SIM cards will enable beneficiaries to get support directly on their phones.
The programme continues the vision of Benazir Bhutto to empower poor women through dignified access to financial services.
The prime minister called on BISP to tie assistance to education and health. He said that families receiving help are required to ensure their children attend school and utilise health facilities.
He also urged shortening the implementation window from eight or ten months to four months.
